Subject: Re:What was your first expeience like in a kart?

Message Body:
>>>1997, Desert Park Raceway. My brother had joined the club the year earlier. I was in the Marine Corps. Came to my brothers wedding in Tahoe. He had a purple 1994 Invader. Did I say purple? Oops he's gonna kill me. Anyways, he said hey, "I got this Go-kart, lets go to the track." I said, "heck yeah lets go." We get to the track and I'm thinking I'm ready to set new records. We unload his kart out of the back of a 1972 blue beat up Chevy Van. We get the thing running (he had his Yammy set up with a 4 hole can, back then they called it Super Can). So I get in and this thing to me was fast. I get out there on the track and I'm taking it easy. I was filled with amazement every corner I came out of. I would come on the straightaway and gas it. The thing felt like a Lamborgini, except full of vibration and very ringy to my ears. Right then, I ws hooked. I was running like 1:05's around the track and I was hooked!!! I discharged from the Marines soon after his wedding. I immediately made my way to Reno. No job, no nothing. My sole purpose to coming to Reno (well I had to get away from my parents at some time) was to buy a Go-Kart with Uncle Sams separation money and get a place to live and race karts in DPR. I did just that, as I was a new member in 1998. Raced Novice Sportsman. My first race I started 14th and finished 2nd in the main. Ended up winning a race here and there until later that year my kart and equipment were stolen. My brothers too. That put me out for good and I stayed away until 2006. Here I am now and I still get that same feeling when I'm on the track; Adrenaline, nervousness, anxiousness, feeling like a kid again. I think that's why I do it. I LOVE KART RACING!

>>the first time i drove a kart was with Dave Moss, he had an Ivader with a Yamaha 80 on it. i had only riden a motor cycle a few times in my life so shifting was very foriegn to me. i dont think i ever got out of 3rd gear throughout the entire track. after about 3 laps i drove it in to the pits, parked it and told Dave that there was nothing fun about it. a few weeks later Dave asked me to try his other kart; a yamaha KT100 set up for novice sportmans. it was the day before a regular club race, there were dozens of karts out that day. not having to shift was a better idea for me. i LOVED it. i bought the kart from dave that night and raced the next day. when i bought the kart i did not even have a full set of wrenches, let alone any of the other things necessary to work on a kart. as i got better at driving i got back in a shifter, i was really hooked then. i bought my first 80 and have never looked back. i now have enough tools to fill 3 tools boxes, one for the track, one for the bench, and one 6' stackable for all the extra tools. i've now been doing this for 14 years and like Brian, every time i get in the kart i have all the emotions you can imagine, with one predominate desire; BEAT BIG HEAD and JOE DIRT!!!!!!!!

>GO GW!!!! lets hear more...no ribbing!

Early 70's... My mom got remarried, and my stepbrother, who was a year and a half older than me had a Fox kart with a Briggs & Stratton 8 hp motor on it. I had a Yamaha 60 Mini Enduro, so I was more into 2 wheels than 4 at the time. I drove it a couple of times, wasn't too impressed. I lived in Tahoe for many years, and probably around the same time Brian was introduced to karting and DPR, so was I. Sometime around 1997 or 1998, a friend of mine knew Dave Schlit, and they were heading up to Reno from South Shore to go run Dave's 80 shifter at DPR. I came along, and was hooked, even though I couldn't get around the track without spinning out. I knew that once I had money for this kind of thing, I'd be right there! Then, 3 years ago, I bought a kart. Jumped in with both feet, trying to field 2 TaG karts and run 2 classes. Having MUCH more fun now roadracing with one kart and ONE driver! Hope to be doing this for several more years before I hang it up...
I may be slow, but I look good, which is a good thing, because people get a better look at me as I go by!!!
